The PowerHouse (Pennsylvania Railroad Power Station)
Long Island City waterfront
The old Pennsylvania Railroad power station, “a brick survivor from 1909 with four smokestacks” (New York Times, 2005), was one of the neighborhood’s landmarks. When a 2005 permit application mentioned demolishing the chimneys, it was QueensWest.com users who spotted it; the developer told the Times the stacks would be preserved.
QueensWest.com later had a PowerHouse section, and in 2006 welcomed the PowerHouse Condominium as a sponsor.
